Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats has issued a Worldwide Threat Assessment that reflects the U.S. intelligence community’s collective assessment of threats to U.S. national security. On Tuesday, Coats and other U.S. intelligence community leaders, including CIA Director Gina Haspel and FBI Director Christopher Wray, briefed the Senate Intelligence Committee on key findings from this latest annual assessment. In the Tuesday SRU, WaterISAC highlighted some of their comments, which included the observation that the Islamic State still poses a threat to the U.S. despite its recent setbacks. The report also addresses threats posed by nation states, which the report submits “will increasingly use cyber capababilities,” as well as those undermining “human security.” According to the report, threats to human security are emerging from environmental degradation, climate change, and infectious diseases, among other challenges.
