To bring attention to earthquakes and their associated risks, the Central United States Earthquake Consortium (CUSEC) and several states are observing Earthquake Awareness Month. During February, they encourage communities to learn about the earthquake hazards they face and take appropriate action to reduce risk. On its website, CUSEC has posted a “Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety” and describes activities such as the Great Shakeout to assist in earthquake preparedness. Another upcoming activity being promoted by CUSEC is the National Earthquake Conference (NEC). Held once every four years, the NEC is set for March 4-6, 2020 in San Diego, California. Although it is less than a month away, registration for the NEC is still open. NEC provides an opportunity for engagement and best practice sharing among a wide variety of stakeholders, including local, state, and federal government representatives; emergency managers and first responders; engineers; scientific research communities; and private sector representatives.
