In a blog post, risk management firm Gate 15 discusses the long-term implications of the recent bombing in Nashville on the terrorism and security landscape. Telecommunications, air travel, credit card machines, and emergency services all were affected as a result of the bomb detonating right outside a major AT&T telecommunication hub. Without any need for expert hacking, the bomber disable communication in 49 counties at the press of a button, creating a dangerous example for other threat actors who might wish to do the same in the future. In a potential, future incident, a bombing could merely be the opening of a more complex attack. For this and a range of other potential scenarios, the Nashville attack should offer an opportunity for leaders to assess their and facilities’ readiness, to discuss dependencies, cascading effects, and resilience with key stakeholders, and to consider whether their preparedness and security are at the appropriate level.
