Water Sector Cyber Threat Web Briefing - South Staffordshire Water: Use Case for Objectively Assessing Information During the Early Stages of a Cyber Incident, Including your Own

Wednesday, January 25, 2023, 2:00 – 3:00 PM ET

In August 2022, South Staffordshire PLC, the parent company of South Staffs Water and Cambridge Water in the UK, became the target of a ransomware attack. There were multiple points of confusion which resulted in erroneous reporting and inaccurate assessments, including whether or not the attackers (the Cl0p ransomware group) had actually gained control of the utilities’ SCADA systems.

For the January 2023 Cyber Threat Briefing, WaterISAC welcomes Ron Fabela, CTO of SynSaber to share his objective insights after sifting through the South Staffs’ evidence to separate fact from fiction. While we all want to know what happened when an attack occurs, we must be cautious of jumping to conclusions, regardless of who the victim is (ourselves or others). Join us on January 25th as Ron shares methodologies on how to validate information for yourself and demystifies the “dark” web to safely look at evidence so we can draw practical conclusions through our own analysis.

Even if you aren’t directly responsible for threat analysis, assessments, or investigations, this presentation will provide tremendous and fascinating insight into what security analysts and victim organizations face every day.
