Oak Ridge National Laboratory has written a post discussing efforts by their researchers to create real-time flood forecasting and early warning tools for the general public.

One of their efforts is the development of the Two-dimensional Runoff and Inundation Toolkit for Operational Needs, or TRITON, which is a “2D open source flood simulation tool designed for modern high performance computing” with a 10 meter resolution. There are also efforts to integrate machine learning into reservoir operation models to create better long-term water management simulations and to study how climate change will affect the federal government’s hydropower infrastructure.
