Both violent crime and property crime fell in 2018 from 2017, according to the FBI. Violent crime is defined as offenses that involve force of threat of force and is composed of four offenses: murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. According to the FBI, the total number of these crimes declined 3.3 percent between 2017 and 2018. Property crime includes burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The total number of these crimes decreased by 6.3 percent. The statistics were published in the FBI’s Crime in the United States 2018, the organization’s annual crime report produced by its Uniform Crime Reporting Program. The report provides access to expanded data about the offenses tracked by the FBI, such as the type of weapon used, the type or value of items stolen, and more. Read the FBI’s press release.
