Automation.com recently reached out to Eaton on the status of a strategic partnership they entered with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) in February 2018, to advance cybersecurity for power management technologies, and help establish measurable cybersecurity standards for network-connected power management products and systems. The first fruits of their labor include a research and testing facility where Eaton’s products are tested in a specialized lab for compliance with industry cybersecurity requirements before they are installed in critical systems. During testing, Eaton and UL follow the UL 2900 Standards Process, Cybersecurity for Network-Connectable Products (published in the summer of 2017) which includes processes to test devices for security vulnerabilities, software weaknesses, and malware. With the boom of internet connected industrial devices across all critical infrastructure sectors, it is crucial for manufacturers to have a platform to prove and certify their devices are secure-by-design before installation.
