August 27, 2018

As of 0500 HST (1100 EST), Lane is located 520 miles west-southwest of Honolulu, Hawaii and proceeding west at 8 mph. Lane has restrengthened to a Tropical Storm with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. A decrease in forward speed is expected tonight as Lane makes a turn toward the northwest. Lane is then expected to accelerate toward the northwest on Tuesday and Wednesday.

There are no watches or warnings in effect. The state of Hawaii has reported it has no unmet needs.

Posted below Situation Reports from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Also included are:

  • Infrastructure Impact Summaries (with an update from 24 August), which assess there will be medium-level impacts to the water and wastewater sector given the likelihood of electric power service disruptions.
  • An Infrastructure Impact Assessment for Highways, which are at risk of being impacted by debris (particularly on the islands of Hawaii and Kauai).
  • An Infrastructure Impact Assessment for Dams, which identifies two dams that are at risk of overtopping as a result of the rainfall and other effects from Lane.

Impacts to critical lifelines sectors:

  • Water and wastewater - No significant impacts reported at this time.
  • Communications - No significant impacts reported at this time.
  • Energy - Power outages throughout the islands are minimal.
  • Transportation - There are sporadic road closures due to flooding, landslides, and debris. All airports and ports are at normal operations.

August 26, 2018

As of 0500 HST (1100 EST), Lane is located 315 miles west-southwest of Honolulu, Hawaii and proceeding north at 10 mph. Lane has been reduced to a Tropical Depression with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph. A brief slowing in forward motion is expected Monday night as Lane makes a turn toward the northwest. Lane is then expected to accelerate northwestward by Tuesday as it transitions to an extratropical low.

There are no watches or warnings in effect. The state of Hawaii has reported it has no unmet needs.

August 25, 2018

As of 0500 HST (1100 EST), Hurricane Lane is located 110 miles south-southwest of Honolulu, Hawaii and proceeding north at 3 mph. Lane is a Tropical Depression with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. On the forecast track, the center of Lane will pass south of Kauai and Niihau later today and tonight.

The Tropical Storm Warning has been discontinued for Hawaii County.

  • Oahu
  • Maui County, including the islands of Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe

A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area.

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for:

  • Kauai County, including the islands of Kauai and Niihau

August 24, 2018

As of 2300 HST on August 23 (0500 EST on August 24), Hurricane Lane is located 215 miles south of Honolulu, Hawaii and proceeding north at 6 mph. Lane is a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph. On the latest forecast track, the center of Lane will move over, or dangerously close to portions of the main Hawaiian islands late Friday and Friday night. Some weakening is forecast from Friday through late Saturday, but Lane is expected to remain a hurricane as it approaches the islands.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for:

  • Oahu
  • Maui County, including the islands of Maui, Lanai, Molokai and Kahoolawe

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for:

  • Hawaii County

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for:

  • Kauai County, including the islands of Kauai and Niihau

August 23, 2018

As of 0500 HST (1100 EST), Hurricane Lane is located 305 miles south of Honolulu, Hawaii and proceeding northwest at 7 mph. Lane is a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph. On the forecast track, the center of Lane will move very close to or over the portions of the main Hawaiian islands later today through Friday. Steady weakening is forecast during the next couple of days, but Lane is expected to remain a hurricane as it draws closer to the islands.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for:

  • Oahu
  • Maui County, including the islands of Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe
  • Hawaii County

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for:

  • Kauai County, including the islands of Kauai and Niihau

August 22, 2018

According to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center, as of 1100 HST (1700 EST) Hurricane Lane is located 420 miles south-southeast of Honolulu, Hawaii and moving west-northwest at 8 mph. Lane is a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph. On the forecast track, the center of Lane will move very close to or over the main Hawaiian Islands from Thursday through Saturday. A steady weakening trend is forecast to begin today, but Lane is expected to remain a dangerous hurricane as it approaches Hawaii.

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for:

  • Hawaii County
  • Maui County, including the islands of Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe

A Hurricane Warning means that hurricane conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area. A warning is typically issued 36 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds, conditions that make outside preparations difficult or dangerous. Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion.

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for:

  • Oahu
  • Kauai County, including the islands of Kauai and Niihau

A Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area. A watch is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds, conditions that make outside preparations difficult or dangerous.

August 21, 2018

Located about 620 miles southeast of Honolulu, Hawaii as of 0500 HST (1100 EST), Hurricane Lane is expected to make a turn toward the Hawaiian Islands later this week. Hurricane Watches have been issued for Hawaii and Maui counties, meaning that hurricane conditions are possible in these areas within 48 hours. On the forecast track, the center of Lane will pass close to the Hawaiin Islands on Thursday. Currently, Lane’s maximum sustained winds are near 150 mph, with higher gusts. Slight weakening is expected over the next couple days, but Lane is expected to remain a dangerous hurricane as it approaches the Hawaiian Islands.
