FEMA’s recently published Long-Term Community Resilience Exercise Resource Guide is intended to be a “one-stop-shop” for any jurisdiction or organization looking to conduct a climate-focused exercise. It includes a list of common terms, templates for climate-focused exercises, and resources related to funding, risk assessments, and training.
As FEMA notes with the release of the guide, the impacts of climate change are being felt today in communities across the country, damaging buildings and infrastructure and causing loss of life. In the face of these challenges, exercises provide an opportunity to build resilience, by discussing and better understanding climate change and planning for, adapting to, and mitigating its risks and hazards. In addition to leading jurisdictions and organizations through the process of designing and conducting climate-focused exercise, the guide identifies numerous resources. These include resources to help understanding of climate change risk, build local capability, and explore hazard mitigation planning.
