The FBI said it has found no signs of any link between a cyber attack on the computer systems for the city of Pensacola, Florida and the attack at the local Naval Air Station in which three sailors were killed and eight others were wounded. The city became aware of the cyber attack early Saturday, just hours after the shooting at the Pensacola Naval Air Station that occurred on Friday. City officials expressed uncertainty over whether the incidents were related but reached out federal authorities as a precaution. The FBI tweeted in a brief statement that its initial investigation has not identified any connection between the cyberattack and the shooting. “Our preliminary investigation continues," the FBI statement said without elaboration. The nature of the cyber attack hasn’t been divulged, such as if it involves ransomware. But in a press release the city acknowledged computers had been disconnected from the city’s network until the issue, which appears to be ongoing as of Tuesday, is resolved. The city indicated email systems, some landlines, 311 customer service, and online bill payments were affected. However, city officials stressed that city offices were open and that all emergency services were running, including 911 services. Read the articles at The New York Times and CNN.
