During April, the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) is drawing attention to the risk of fires in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), the zone of transition between unoccupied land and human development. It is the line, area, or zone where structures and other human development meet or intermingle with undeveloped wildland or vegetative fuels. Communities adjacent to and surrounded by wildland are at varying degrees of risk from wildfires. As the USFA notes, many people don’t think they have a WUI problem and that WUI fires only occur in western states. But about 70,000 communities across the U.S. are at risk of these fires. The USFA is also providing resources and information to help communities learn about the WUI and what they can do prevent and mitigate fires. Access the information and resources at the USFA.
