Said Azzam Mohamad Rahim, a Jordan-born man who resided in Texas, is awaiting trial for lying to the FBI and providing material support to the Islamic State. The evidence collected by the FBI that lead to his arrest provides a case study of how jihadists communicate with one another, which can include via little-known encrypted social media apps. In these private forums, which the FBI was eventually able to access and observe, participants praised recent terror attacks and encouraged one another to attack people in their communities, including coworkers, and to travel abroad to join terrorist groups. Rahim, who was particularly active in advocating for violence on the forums monitoried by the FBI, encouraged his colleagues to kill however they could and in ways that yielded the highest numbers of fatalities.
